Gary Bettman made himself heard perfectly clear at the mid-season meetings, he is not planning on stepping down as Commissioner any time soon. Gary Bettman has served as the Commissioner of the NHL since 1993. Under his watch, the league has expanded to 32 teams, achieved record revenues, and expanded the game's visibility. With over thirty years at the helm, it has become more and more frequent to hear when Bettman will retire or step down. Rumors at the beginning of this season stated the league was making moves for his eventual replacement, but there has been no concrete information made public. Speculation has piled up quite a bit recently for his exit. At this week's general managers' meetings, reporter Pierre LeBrun asked for an update if Bettman had provided the league's GMs with any word of his plans.
Bettman isn't going anywhere anytime soon, at least according to him
Bettman brushed this question off rather expeditiously. Absolutely not, he said. You keep trying to get rid of me. No such luck. I'm going to see if I can outlast you. - Gary Bettman

Loading from Twitter ...

During those meetings, Bettman openly spoke about some of the league's most significant issues, including the salary cap, playoff format, and his future. What he said was that he has no plans to retire anytime in the near future. What he has in store for his long-term plan remains uncertain. Bettman has presided over the league for over 30 years and has led the league to phenomenal success. Though his own schedule for retirement remains a secret, one thing is certain, he appears committed to hanging on with the NHL at least until brokering the next Collective Bargaining Agreement in 2026.
