Former Canucks forward Sheldon Rempal was placed on waivers earlier today by the Washington Capitals, and teams will have a full day to put in a claim. The Capitals have placed forward and former Vancouver Canuck Sheldon Rempal on waivers, which was first reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet on Thursday.

Loading from Twitter ...

Rempal was previously on assignment to AHL Hershey after clearing waivers earlier in the month, so he is now on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a mutual contract termination. Rempal has only been with the Capitals organization for a few months after they signed him to a two-way deal early in free agency. The minor-league veteran was returning to North America after spending last season overseas in Russia with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where he lit up the Kontinental Hockey League with 31 goals and 61 points in 68 games. Through four games with AHL Hershey, he had a goal and an assist and carried a minus-two rating. Rempal may have a better-paying opportunity lined up overseas, and with the Caps having plenty of young talent in their system, it was unlikely he had a more than marginal chance of playing multiple games in the NHL.
Sheldon Rempal will become an unrestricted free agent if he goes unclaimed on waivers this time around
Rempal will be paid a $450K salary if he spends all year in the minors. In the likely event he's not claimed by another team in the next 24 hours, he'll become an unrestricted free agent tomorrow and be free to sign anywhere. Rempal's possible departure paves a longer runway for young forwards Andrew Cristall, Eriks Mateiko, Ivan Miroshnichenko, and Ilya Protas to climb up the depth chart this season. It'll also free up a contract slot for Washington, leaving them with seven open ones, which can be put to good use down the season.
