Connor McDavid just gave Jeff Blashill and Connor Bedard the kind of outside validation Chicago fans have been waiting for.

This wasn't empty praise. McDavid grouped the Blackhawks with Anaheim, San Jose, and Utah as part of the West's new push.
"How long before Chicago figures it out."

That's the line that jumps.
The bigger read is simple: the Oilers captain doesn't see Chicago as a soft stop on the schedule anymore. He sees a club getting close enough to matter.
That should land inside the Blackhawks' room because it matches the pressure around this team. Chicago finished 29-39-14 for 72 points, while Edmonton ended at 93.
Connor Bedard is a big reason the perception is changing. He put up 30 goals and 75 points in 69 games, and he's already driving top-line usage at 20:52 a night.
Chicago still has work to do, and McDavid's quote actually sharpens that point. Respect from the best player in the league is nice. Turning that into standings pressure is the next step.
McDavid is being blunt, not polite. He puts Chicago in the same breath as the teams already closing the gap.
"This year felt like there was a big turnover. Those young teams are not young, losing teams. They're really good teams with great players. San Jose is the same way [as Anaheim], you know, how long before Chicago figures it out, Utah's right there too. So it was a big kind of changeover year, and we gotta get going."

Why this hits harder than a normal compliment

Jeff Blashill is now the coach, so this quote lands at a useful moment. It gives the new bench boss a league-level talking point before his first full camp even opens.
It also reinforces Kyle Davidson's plan. Chicago's rebuild is no longer being framed as distant. It's being framed as near enough that contenders are noticing it.
And Bedard will love that part. Franchise centers want proof their team is being taken seriously, not sympathy for being young.
The Blackhawks still need more wins, cleaner defending, and a stronger team game. But once McDavid says Chicago is right there, the bar changes.
Now the expectation changes too. Fans don't just get to dream on the future. They get to look at next season and ask for movement.
