The cities of Edmonton, as well as that of Red Deer, Alberta, have officially been selected as the hosts for the 2027 World Junior Hockey Championships.
One of the most prestigious tournaments in hockey is set to return to the province of Alberta. On Tuesday, Hockey Canada announced that the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in the cities of Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
The number of times that Canada hosted the World Juniors
If you include the unofficial 1975 tournament, when Winnipeg and Brandon, Manitoba, co-hosted the event, 2027 will mark the 20th time that Canada has hosted the World Juniors.
2027 will also be the fifth time the city of Edmonton has been one of the hosts. The provincial capital of Alberta first co-hosted the event with Red Deer and Calgary back in 1995.
Edmonton later co-hosted it again in 2012, and then served as the primary host in 2021 and 2022 during the COVID years. Canada won gold in 1995 and 2022.
Rogers Place, also home of the Edmonton Oilers, will most likely serve as the 'A' rink for the 2027 World Juniors, while the Marchant Crane Centrium, home of the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels, will be the secondary arena.
Why Canada is expected to play all their games in Edmonton
It's expected that all of Canada's games will be in the bigger arena located in Edmonton.
Canada will also hold the event in 2029, with Quebec City and Trois-Rivières co-hosting the prestigious tournament. This year's World Juniors will be held in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota.
While the Americans are looking for an unprecedented third consecutive gold medal, the Canadians are hoping some young talent can help turn the country's fortunes around.
The last time the tournament was held in the USA was in Buffalo in 2018, where Canada took home the gold.
