The Habs are currently 28th overall, which is not bad news given the quality of the upcoming draft. By having a top 5 or even top 10 pick, let's just say that the Tricolore will add a very good player to their roster, in addition to having an 8.5% chance of winning the Connor Bedard lottery. However, since we are very greedy, we don't want to settle for this pick alone. Kent Hughes acquired the first pick from the Panthers in the trade that sent Ben Chiarot to Florida last year. Remember that this pick is not protected. With the up and down season that the Panthers had, one could hope, not so long ago, that their pick would be a top 10! But Aleksander Barkov's team got back on track and they will finally make the playoffs, thanks to the Penguins' loss on Tuesday night. This means that the Habs will get at best the 17th pick and will have no chance to be ahead of this selection.

This is very bad news since most optimists really believed that the Habs could have two high first round picks. However, it should be remembered that the draft is not an exact science and two very good examples are Kaiden Guhle and Cole Caufield, who were selected 16th and 15th respectively.
