As we reported earlier this week, major news has occurred in the world of junior hockey, as the Commissioner of the QMJHL, Gilles Courteau, has announced that he will retire in 2024. Courteau had been in the position since 1986.

Obviously, after such news, it is never long before the world speculates on a possible successor and one of the first names that come up most often is that of Marc Denis.
The former NHL goaltender, who has been an analyst for Montreal Canadiens games on RDS for several years, is also very active in Quebec field hockey, but especially in the QMJHL. He has held several positions in junior hockey, going from coach with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, to a training manager now.
He would definitely be an excellent choice, but if he becomes QMJHL commissioner, he would obviously have to leave RDS.
Called to discuss the matter, his closest colleague at RDS, Pierre Houde, broke the silence. He was very generous in accepting to comment on the situation.
"We're still a long way from the opening of the calls for candidates to succeed Gilles Courteau, but yes I saw that Marc's name was mentioned. That said, Marc Denis would certainly make an excellent candidate." - Pierre Houde

He also adds that it is not surprising to learn that Marc Denis' name has been mentioned. Houde also mentions the names of Jocelyn Thibault, Danièle Sauvageau and Stéphane Quintal, other proud QMJHL standard bearers.
"Marc told me yesterday, and I don't want to answer for him, that we are far from the call for candidates. Is Marc a good candidate? Of course he's a good candidate." - Pierre Houde

Moreover, the Tricolore's game describer told that the subject came up, jokingly, during a recent meeting with the bosses of RDS.
Without a doubt, Marc Denis would make an excellent successor to Gilles Courteau as commissioner. However, it must be added that Pierre Houde and Marc Denis do a colossal job together. The CH games would be very different without him to offer his constructive and interesting analysis.
This will be an issue to follow in the coming months.
