New NHL Expansion Teams: Names of cities put forward, including one very big surprise

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was on TJMS yesterday to discuss the major announcement of the past few days that the National Hockey League will eventually add new expansion teams.

Of course, most fans and observers have already started to speculate on the next most likely cities to host an NHL team, and that's exactly the subject Friedman addressed on the radio.

True to form, he agreed to give some insight and put forward some names of cities, even offering some interesting explanations on them.

It is noted that several surprises stand out.

"Friedman on TJMS says Vegas and Seattle are two high revenue generating teams, they're not at the top, but they're close to the top and that's why Friedman thinks Bettman is fighting for Arizona and that's why he's wondering about Houston or Austin or Toronto #2.

Friedman doesn't think expansion is necessarily imminent, but he also believes they (NHL executives) will possibly do it at some point because of the success Seattle and Vegas have had.

Marek isn't so sure a second team in Toronto is possible, especially with all the money the Leafs pay in revenue sharing." - NHL Watcher

What we can take away from all of this is that the NHL is closer than ever to possibly starting a new expansion process, to add new teams in the next few years.

On the other hand, Quebec City fans will be very far from delighted to hear that the cities put forward here are: Houston, Austin and Toronto for a second time?

A nice slap in the face for a city that already has its amphitheatre ready to welcome a professional team tomorrow morning. Imagine for a second if the city of Toronto receives a second team and Quebec City still has to bite the dust.
