A new report from this NHL insider has just revealed that the Calgary Flames and Noah Hanifin nearly reached a deal to extend his contract.

Hanifin and Flames Nearly Reach Deal Worth Over $7 Million Per

The Calgary Flames are on the precipice of finalizing their roster pieces in the current rebuild, after committing long-term to guys like Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri and MacKenzie Weegar. However, they still have some loose ends to tie up on their remaining stars, including Noah Hanifin.
Noah Hanifin's contract is set to expire after this season, and it has now been reported by TSN's Pierre LeBrun that the Flames and Hanifin nearly reached an 8-year deal with $7.5 Million AAV, but Hanifin had a change of heart and it did not get done.
"They came so close to extending Noah Hanifin... around $7.5 million that Hanifin had on the table and it was actually Hanifin who backed off from it and I don't know if any of that has changed now. I don't know if you can put the genie back in the bottle but the idea from everyone involved is that he gets dealt as a signed player, that there's an extension in place for him wherever he ends up."

This is not good news for Calgary, who is looking to either trade Hanifin or sign him long-term. It now appears that he could be willing to test the free agent market.

Hanifin Playing Great Hockey This Season

Hanifin is playing some of the best hockey of his career this year, scoring 10 points in 22 games so far. The 6-foot-3 defenseman also has an impressive plus-2 rating, given the ice time he takes on.
Noah Hanifin is on pace to set career highs in goals and is playing some of his best hockey as a Calgary Flame.

It could be possible that Hanifin has a newfound desire to choose his next team on the free agency market, instead of being dealt wherever the Flames deem best. Either way, this is bad news for Flames fans as they could lose him for nothing next year.
