Kent Hughes is a genius with this transaction
With the transactions that Kent Hughes has completed, we knew that this aspect of his work was very well mastered. All that was missing was the "signing" aspect to evaluate, and it's safe to say that the Cole Caufield contract is also a flawless one.
However, his best move was the acquisition of Sean Monahan. To pay the forward's salary, Hughes received a conditional first-round pick. Wait and see.
According to Frank Seravalli, Noah Hanifin, Mikael Backlund and Elias Lindholm all intend to test the autonomous player market in the summer of 2024, which will force the Flames' GM to make transactions.
The Flames won't be very competitive, which is good for the Canadiens, who hold their first-round pick.

Continuing in the same vein, Tyler Toffili has officially been placed on the trade market. This is the first trade Kent Hughes has made. The Habs received Emil Heineman, Tyler Pitlick, their 1st-round pick in 2022 (Filip Mesar) and their 5th-round pick in 2023 (to be determined).
If Hughes can get Toffoli again by paying less to acquire him, that would really be the icing on the cake!
