Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers spoke to reporters yesterday, addressing his controversial slash on JT Miller. No one has ever accused Nikolaj Ehlers of being a dirty player. If anything, he is one of the more sportsman-like players in the NHL. Through 663 career regular-season games, he has just 215 penalty minutes, and his career high in that category is just 38. This season he has been particularly good, putting up just ten penalty minutes in 58 games, including the slash on Miller earlier this week.

Loading from Twitter ...

After the game, Ehlers revealed how he really feels about the incident, telling reporters that he prides himself on playing a clean game, and that it wasn't meant to be violent. He was only trying to step up for himself after Miller took a shot at him. I've already talked to (Miller). I wasn't too happy, too proud of myself for that one. It wasn't meant to be that violent, if you want to put it that way. You want to stick up for yourself, you want to stick up for a teammate. That's how it goes in the playoffs. But you can do it in different ways than what I did. And that's something I want to work on. That being said, he clearly crossed a line on this instance, but making matters worse is the fact that he got Miller on the wrist, which is one of the most vulnerable spots for hockey players. Luckily, Miller was okay and finished the game. Ehlers collected an assist in 15 minutes of ice time during the 2-1 victory over the Rangers. The Jets appear to be the team to beat this year as the victory and subsequent win over the Central Division rival Dallas Stars moved them to 46-17-4, good for 96 points through 67 games. That gives the Jets a two-point advantage over the Washington Capitals for the point-lead in the NHL and a ten-point lead over Dallas for the division title.

Loading from Twitter ...

Clearly, the team is destined for the playoffs, so at this point we are just waiting to see whether or not they win the President's trophy, and also how far they can make it. Are the Jets true contenders this season? Or are they just another team that can do it all in the regular season, but struggles in the playoffs?
