The Jets have decided to place forward David Gustafsson on waivers in order to make room on the roster for the return of Jonathan Toews tonight. NHL insider Murat Ates has revealed that David Gustafsson is heading to waivers to make room for Jonathan Toews, as he is set to make his Jets regular-season debut tonight. This means that Brad Lambert and Parker Ford remain with the team.

Loading from Twitter ...

Winnipeg could have easily moved waiver-exempt prospects Parker Ford or Brad Lambert to AHL Manitoba instead, so seeing them instead risk losing Gustafsson on waivers is a massive development. Neither Ford nor Lambert is projected to be in tonight's lineup, but they've now both broken camp and made the Jets team alongside fellow youngster Nikita Chibrikov.
The Jets Expected David Gustafsson to Develop Better Than His Current Path
Gustafsson, age 25, has been a sound two-way depth piece but never developed offensively as Winnipeg hoped for when selecting him in the second round of the 2018 NHL draft. He's never pushed his way above a 13th or 14th forward role and has only averaged 25 appearances per year over his six NHL seasons. He's been a non-factor on the scoresheet as well, never scoring more than three goals or seven points in a single given season. Over the last three years, only 13 forwards with at least 100 games played have produced a lower points per game than Gustafsson. Still, it begs the question of why the Jets wanted to risk losing him on waivers when they had other safer options. If Gustafsson clears waivers, he'll head to Manitoba and play for the Moose. His last full-time assignment there was in 2021-22, when he put together a respectable 15 goals and 15 assists in 47 games.
