Winnipeg Jets Connected To Three Potential Free Agent Signings Ahead Of Training Camp
With NHL training camp just around the corner the Winnipeg Jets have been linked to three players as potential training camp invites.
The Jets have done a lot in free agency to upgrade their team adding big names like Jonathan Toews and Gustav Nyquist.
Still, the Jets could use extra depth on the fringes of the roster both up front and on defense.
This morning, Connor Baldwin of Jets Nation has linked the team to three potential options.
Winnipeg Jets Linked To Three Free Agent Options
In a new article from Jets Nation, NHL analyst Connor Baldwin suggested the team sign one of Matt Grzelcyk, Luke Glendening, or Tyler Motte.
First up, when discussing Grzelcyk, Baldwin believes he could provide good competition and motivation for players like Haydn Fleury and Ville Heinola.
I'm confident in Haydn Fleury's ability to be the Jets 3rd line left defence, but bringing Grzelcyk to the Jets training camp would create some real competition for Fleury. Logan Stanley and Ville Heinola will try (again) to make the Jets opening night roster, but without someone like Grzelcyk at camp, it looks like it would be Fleury's job to lose. Grzelcyk is an easy choice for a PTO that would help balance the Jets blue line for the upcoming season if the Jets see Winnipeg as a good spot for him to continue his career.
Next up, when talking about Luke Glendening, Baldwin does not see a path for him to make the team but could provide a defensive presence and leadership to help teach the younger players throughout training camp and preseason.
You won't see Glendening's name on the scoresheet often, but he's a faceoff and defensive specialist at centre that could be serviceable on the Jets 4th line during Lowry's absence. I'm not very confident about Glendening's chances of making the Jets, but he would still be a great veteran presence to have during what should be a competitive training camp.
Finally, Tyler Motte is categorized as a penalty killing specialist who could legitimately challenge for a roster spot.
Tyler Motte on a PTO would be fun to watch because he's someone who you know will be making a push for a roster spot. The Jets did already sign several depth NHL caliber wingers, but adding Motte to the mix on a PTO could create even more competition for the 4th line. The role that Motte excels at the most is the penalty kill. Although he only played 55 games with the Red Wings last season, he averaged a minute and a half of penalty killing time a night.
While none of these players will be true difference makers next season each of them could find a role on the Jets and provide the depth that is always necessary during a long 82 game schedule.
As training camp comes along, all eyes will be on Kevin Cheveldayoff to see if he gives any of the veterans a chance to play.
