With the Winnipeg Jets season now over focus has shifted to the off-season and the team has been linked to a talented young forward. Over the last week, reports have begun to flood in regarding the future of Nikolaj Ehlers with the Winnipeg Jets. As of now no deal has been agreed to between the two sides making it more and more likely that Ehlers will become a free agent on July 1st. As a result, sources have tried to find a potential replacement that the Jets could bring in after the departure of Ehlers. This evening Buffalo Sabres forward JJ Peterka has entered the radar of the Jets
Winnipeg Jets Linked To Young Buffalo Sabres Star Forward
In a new piece for Sportsnet, NHL analyst Jacob Stoller explored the Winnipeg Jets offseason options. With Ehlers leaving one player on Stoller's radar is 23-year-old winger JJ Peterka of the Buffalo Sabres. Peterka and the Sabres are coming off of yet another disappointing season and some reports have indicated the restricted free agent would welcome a change of scenery. In his third season with the Sabres, Peterka tallied a career high in points with 68 including 27 goals.

Loading from Twitter ...

Beyond that insider Frank Seravalli believes there will be a healthy market to acquire Peterka if he becomes available.

Loading from Twitter ...

Stoller believes that Peterka's speed and scoring prowess could be the perfect fit to replace Ehlers. JJ Peterka would be such an awesome fit for the Jets. The speedy 23-year-old is a threat to score every time he touches the puck - he came within spitting distance of 30 goals in consecutive years - and he's got a good motor. He'd provide some 'pop' to a second line that'll look grim if Ehlers leaves. While Peterka would be a fantastic fit for the Jets he would come at a price either through restricted free agency or a trade. If the Jets sign Peterka it is likely they have to give up at least one first round pick as compensation. In a trade, the Jets could use their top prospects and other roster players as compensation instead leaving their draft picks open for future deals or to replenish what they give up.
