With the Winnipeg Jets season now complete, focus has shifted to the offseason and an NHL insider has provided an update on Nikolaj Ehlers' future.

Earlier today, reporter Murat Ates confirmed that re-signing Nikolaj Ehlers is a priority for the Winnipeg Jets.
While the Jets would love to have Ehlers back in the fold for next season, the assumption has always been that the Ehlers will be more expensive than the Jets can afford.
With all of the Jets focus now on re-signing Ehlers, NHL insider Chris Johnston has added his voice to the conversation discussing how far apart the two sides potentially are.

NHL Insider Gives A Behind The Scenes Look At Extension Talks With Nikolaj Ehlers

During his segment discussing Ehlers, Johnston admits that the situation still remains uncertain between the Jets and Ehlers.
He confirms that if Ehlers goes for the payday many expect the Winnipeg Jets will have to go out of their current comfort zone to match those expectations.
A little less clear with Ehlers, I think ultimately for the Jets to keep him they might have to extend beyond where their comfort zone is to pay him.

Johnston then confirms that several teams are expected to be interested in the services of Ehlers if he makes it to free agency.
The market dynamics suggest someone like Ehlers is going to have a fair number of opportunities. I think there are a lot of other top teams out there of which Winnipeg is one of that are going to be looking for scoring help.

With this information confirmed it likely means the Winnipeg Jets best chance to keep Ehlers is to strike a deal before free agency opens.
This would allow GM Kevin Cheveldayoff to set the market without the influence of other teams driving the price up potentially.
As for where Johnston sees this situation heading, he believes that Ehlers wants to remain a Jet and the organization want him back if the deal makes sense.
I think there's a desire for him to stay in Winnipeg on both sides of the table if the deal makes sense but it is not yet clear if that is going to happen.

From all indications, if Nikolaj Ehlers signs elsewhere this summer, it means that Cheveldayoff and the front office could not even make a competitive offer to keep Ehlers around.
As this situation continues to develop, we will pass along the latest news and notes on Ehlers future with the Winnipeg Jets and beyond.
