Cole Perfetti trade buzz just hit the Winnipeg Jets, and it feels like a real fork-in-the-road moment.
David Pagnotta floated Perfetti as a name that has "popped up" in talks, if Winnipeg can land a controllable piece in the same age range.
That is the key part, controllable. Rentals do not fix a roster that is still searching for its identity.
Perfetti is 24, drafted in 2020, first round, 10th overall by the Jets.
He also is not some throw-in contract. He carries a $3.25 million cap hit and is tracking to RFA status after this season.
Here's the post people are reacting to.
On the ice, the counting stats are modest so far: 3-11-14 in 35 games.
But usage tells a different story, with Perfetti sitting in that middle-six, second-unit power play lane.

Jets fans feel the tension right now, because moving a young skill winger screams "shortcut," even if the standings are staring everyone down.
Winnipeg's record sits at 19-23-6, so the temptation to shake the room is obvious.
If the return is a controllable top-four defender, I get it. The blue line needs more pace behind Josh Morrissey.
If the return is another forward, it better be a true top-six driver who can play through contact and still create.
Perfetti's best value is how he slows plays down in the offensive zone and finds seams on the man advantage.
The risk is losing that skill right before it clicks, especially with his contract still manageable.
Watch the next couple games closely, because Winnipeg's lineup choices will telegraph whether this is smoke or a plan.
