Jets' Josh Morrissey moved past legend Dustin Byfuglien for most assists by a defenseman in team history, and sent him a classy message. Another game, another record for Winnipeg Jets blueliner Josh Morrissey. The Calgary product shattered Dustin Byfuglien's mark for assists as a defenceman in Winnipeg's 2-1 win over the Flames on Monday. Interestingly enough, Byfuglien was Morrissey's original defensive partner when he started breaking into the NHL, a player often credited by Morrissey with showing him the ropes during his early years in the league. Just so much admiration for him, so much respect for him, very thankful for his mentorship, said Morrissey after practice at hockey for all centre on Wednesday. I guess, early on, and how many things I learned from him, I'm not sure I ever thought I would pass him in something, but yeah, it's pretty cool.

Loading from Twitter ...

The Jets' 5-1 record to start the season is impressive considering they've played without captain Adam Lowry, Dylan Samberg, and Cole Perfetti, but the team's structure and consistency haven't slipped with a band of newcomers inserted into the lineup. There were minimal lineup adjustments against Calgary, with Morgan Barron not practicing and being listed as day-to-day, said head coach Scott Arniel. Another positive note early in the year has been Nino Niederreiter, who continues to contribute offensively with the luxury of playing with several different centremen.
Jets players have shown their ability to play with multiple linemates so far this season
Usually skating alongside Lowry, Niederreiter has already played with Vlad Namestnikov, Jonathan Toews, and Gustav Nyquist, demonstrating his versatility and dependability in whatever role is asked of him. At the same time, Winnipeg's penalty killing has been close to flawless, first in the NHL at 96.3% and without having given up a power-play goal since Opening Night. In Lowry's and Samberg's absence, additions like Toews, Tanner Pearson, and Cole Koepke have perfected Arniel's system. The Jets will seek to maintain their promising start when they host the Seattle Kraken Thursday night at Canada Life Centre, an opportunity to establish early-season momentum and Morrissey's milestone achievement.
