Scott Arniel's Jets sent Danny Zhilkin, 22, back to Manitoba Friday after his emergency recall ran out.

Zhilkin was Winnipeg's 2022 third-round pick, No. 77 overall, and this move says more about roster math than a change in belief. His cap hit sits at $803,333, and he has one year left after this season on his entry-level deal.
The trigger was simple. Winnipeg finally had enough healthy forwards to ice 12, so the emergency exception disappeared after Zhilkin was scratched in Thursday's 3-0 loss to Dallas.
That's the part fans shouldn't miss. This wasn't Arniel punting on a prospect. It was the Jets cleaning up the paper side of the roster before the next stretch of games. Winnipeg's next game is Saturday, April 4, at Columbus.
Zhilkin still got six NHL games out of the call-up and recorded his first NHL point, a primary assist against Chicago in a 4-3 overtime win on Tuesday. That matters in a pressure spot.
Down in Manitoba, the bigger picture is stronger than the transaction line. Zhilkin has 11 goals and 22 points in 54 AHL games, a clear step from where he was in his first two pro seasons.

This is a roster signal, not a setback

The Jets are still chasing ground in the West, so every roster slot has to serve the next puck drop. After the loss in Dallas, there's less room for development looks and more need for plug-and-play certainty.
That's why this send-down fits the moment. Veteran availability drives the bench right now, while Zhilkin goes back to heavier minutes, more touches, and real offensive reps with the Moose.
For Winnipeg, that's smart asset handling. A young center on an inexpensive deal keeps building instead of sitting in the press box as a spare forward.
And for Zhilkin, the assignment still comes with a positive marker. He showed he could survive NHL pace, handle a short recall, and leave with that first point on the board.
