NHL insider Craig Button was recently on a segment of TSN where he stated that this is the time for the Winnipeg Jets to make a very deep playoff run. Few people are as passionate about hockey as TSN analyst Craig Button, especially with the Stanley Cup playoffs looming. This year, Button is backing the Winnipeg Jets to win it all. Having wrapped up the regular-season standings in first place and captured the Presidents' Trophy, Winnipeg appears to have the most open route to a championship. I'm picking Winnipeg, I think this is their time Button said. Winnipeg is going to play the second wild card. Not that there's an easy path, but you don't have to get chunks taken out of you in a real hard, first-round matchup like Dallas and Colorado or Tampa Bay and Florida. Two really good teams are going to get knocked out of the first round of the playoffs while the team that goes on is also going to have chunks taken out of them.

Loading from Twitter ...

The last Canadian team to win a Stanley Cup was Montreal in 1993
They will have an opportunity to shatter Canada's 32-year Stanley Cup famine. Since the Montreal Canadiens did it back in 1993, no Canadian club has captured the Cup. When Button forecast the result, the Jets had not yet clinched their first-round foe. Options were the Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, or Calgary Flames. It was ultimately St. Louis. A win against the Blues would set up a tougher second-round series against either the Dallas Stars or the Colorado Avalanche.

Loading from Twitter ...

The playoffs begin Saturday, with each series a best-of-seven. Four elimination rounds will determine the champion by June 23. Winnipeg was shocked in last year's first round by Colorado, defeated in five games. That series finished off head coach Rick Bowness' time with the team. At this year's helm is former assistant Scott Arniel, who continued to build on what Bowness had in place. Among the key reasons for Winnipeg's success is goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who should claim his second consecutive Vezina Trophy. Signed long-term by GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, Hellebuyck could be the difference-maker as the Jets push to keep pace with the NHL's elite.
