Today, former Calgary Flames forward Walker Duehr revealed why he decided to sign with the Winnipeg Jets in free agency. The Winnipeg Jets have been a perennial contender over the last decade in the NHL largely due to their talented core group. After losing a key piece of that core when Nikolaj Ehlers decided to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes the Jets had to reload. One of the moves they made in an attempt to reload was signing free agent Walker Duehr.

Loading from Twitter ...

Duehr joins the Jets after spending last season split between the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks and figures to be a key depth piece in Winnipeg. Today, he spoke to the media for the first time and revealed why Winnipeg was the right spot for him.
Former Flame Walker Duehr Confirms Why He Signed With The Winnipeg Jets
During the interview, Duehr admitted that he heavily considered his family life and their comfort when decided on a new home for the first time as a free agent. I think everything was kind of new to me, and there was a lot of stuff happening quickly. I'd been a restricted free agent (RFA) with Calgary a couple times and ended up getting signed back with them, so it was just about trying to figure out the best fit for me and my family as well. Ultimately, Winnipeg became the clear choice as it is close to his home in South Dakota and the team provides a style of play that fits Duehr's game perfectly. It's only a six-and-a-half-hour drive. That'll be nice for the family, but I'm joining a team that's had a lot of success in recent years. They've got a good core, and they play a style that really embraces the style I play as well. It's kind of one of the reasons I signed there. I'm excited to get going with them. Over the last three seasons, Duehr has split time between the AHL and the NHL playing playing 91 games in the NHL over those seasons. As training camp gets underway the 27 year old will look to try and carve out a permanent role in the NHL with the Jets.
