During the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman predicted that Kyle Connor could sign a record breaking extension. The Winnipeg Jets and Kyle Connor continue to have discussions about a potential contract extension as Connor enters the final year of his deal. Initial reports indicated that Connor would likely demand a salary similar to Mitch Marner around 12 million dollars per season. However, a new report from Elliotte Friedman has suggested Connor could land a much bigger deal that breaks a record depending on how long he waits to sign.
Elliotte Friedman Suggests Kyle Connor Could Sign a Record Breaking Deal
During a discussion about Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov's extension talks Elliotte Friedman mentioned Kyle Connor. Kaprizov recently turned down a deal that would have made him the highest paid player in NHL history.

Loading from Twitter ...

Friedman believes that with this offer on the table for Kaprizov that Connor will likely sign for over 12 million which would be a record breaking deal for a winger if he signs before Kaprizov. Even if he waits and signs after Kaprizov Friedman predicts when all is said and done Connor will be the second highest paid winger in the NHL. Don't you think if Kyle Connor signs before Kaprizov he's going to be the highest paid winger in the league. Even if Kaprizov signs first Connor's probably going to be the second highest paid winger in the league. As for how this impacts his future with the Jets Friedman believes both sides are interested in a long-term deal but Kyle Connor doubling the Jets next highest paid players Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck could become problematic. I do think the Jets want to get that done and I do think he wants to stay. But we were kind of talking about it and boy that's a lot compared to the Jets other star players. This makes it clear that if the Winnipeg Jets want to keep Kyle Connor around they will have to make a significant investment on a level that Kevin Cheveldayoff and the organization never have before. Now, negotiations will continue and it will be fun to see if the eventual contract does end up breaking an NHL record once Kyle Connor signs in Winnipeg or elsewhere.
