Quinn Hughes was visibly upset in his post-game interview after yet another Canucks loss, and his comments appeared to be a sign he's thrown in the towel. With their playoff aspirations hanging in the balance, the Vancouver Canucks needed last night's game to spark a late season push. Instead, they were handed a crushing 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Seattle Kraken at home. As the last few seconds ticked away, the arena filled with a mix of cheers and boos, with definitely a lot more of the latter.

Loading from Twitter ...

The Canucks' playoff hopes were slim going into the contest, but following a blowout defeat at the hands of a Kraken team that had already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, their post-season dreams are now all but a pipe dream. Vancouver trails the final wild-card spot by eight points, with a game in hand on both clubs ahead of them. With just seven games remaining, they can't afford to lose again if they're going to stay in the race. They're looking at needing a 7-0-0 record. Despite the daunting odds, head coach Rick Tocchet was optimistic. You've got to believe in yourself. If you're struggling as a player, you've got to turn your game around, said head coach Rick Tocchet. Plus we've got a bunch of young guys and you owe it to them to keep pushing. I know it's the same old thing coaches say but you've got to keep getting at it, working at it. There's some plays there [to make] and some poise stuff, we've just got to relax in certain situations. [Play with] intensity, but relax, there's plays there, and I just think we're not finding them.
Quinn Hughes appeared to wave the white flag following the game
Captain Quinn Hughes, however, didn't sound nearly as confident. Other than the scoreboard, the nature of the Canucks' loss made the defeat all the more disappointing. Everyone is looking at the standings daily and knows what the percentages or whatnot, said captain Quinn Hughes. We know where we're at.

Loading from Twitter ...

Seattle got on the board early and continued to add to their advantage, while Vancouver's offense sputtered, unable to capitalize on the power play and not generating dangerous scoring opportunities despite firing plenty of shots. The Canucks return to action this weekend with back-to-back contests against the Anaheim Ducks and the Vegas Golden Knights. Those are games they need to win if they hope to rescue their fading playoff hopes.
