Tonight a new report from NHL analyst Nick Kypreos has confirmed the reason the Canucks are hesitant to part ways with Elias Pettersson before the trade deadline.

In recent days Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford confirmed that Vancouver was at the beginning of a multi-year rebuild.
With the trade of former captain Quinn Hughes, Rutherford and GM Patrik Allvin affirmed that no one is safe and that all options are open when building the Canucks for the future.
This has called into question the future of star center Elias Pettersson who has left a complicated and polarizing impression on fans in Vancouver.
Despite many fans hoping for Pettersson to be traded reports have indicated a trade involving the Swede could have to wait until the offseason for one specific reason.

Canucks unsure about trading Elias Pettersson without getting a number one center in return

According to NHL analyst Nick Kypreos, the Canucks feel the need to get a top center back in exchange for Pettersson along with other future assets.
Similar to the deal involving Quinn Hughes, Rutherford and Allvin want a player in return they could see being a building block for the next iteration of the Canucks similar to what they are getting from Zeev Buium.
The issue...is that they also need a centre back; Besides top prospects and [1sts], they need something to hold the front line; Carolina...could Kotkaniemi be a seat-holder until Vancouver is able to...develop another centre?
However, acquiring a center with similar prowess and potential is much more difficult to do in-season as teams are wanting to hold onto those types of players at all costs during the year.
This means that while the Canucks are willing to move on from Pettersson a deal is more likely to get done during the offseason when top center prospects and draft picks are more readily available.
As more information is provided on potential trades involving Elias Pettersson we will pass along all of the latest details to you.
