Tonight in a new interview former Canucks defenseman Dana Murzyn called out Mark Messier and his former head coach Mike Keenan for ruining the team. The Vancouver Canucks are no stranger to locker room problems as an organization after dealing with the Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller saga this season. Now a new interview with former defenseman Dana Murzyn has revealed that the organization had similar issues of a locker room divided between stars back in the 1990s as well. Heading into the 1997 season the Vancouver Canucks made a bold move bringing in legendary forward Mark Messier to be the centerpiece of their new era. Along with signing Messier away from the New York Rangers he was also immediately named the captain of the team replacing Trevor Linden who was then relegated to an assistant captain. At the time this move made sense as Messier was a natural born leader and superstar however according to Muzryn the move created a massive divide in the locker room.
Dana Muzryn Bashes Mark Messier For Ruining Canucks Team Chemistry
In a new interview Muzryn revealed that Messier came into the locker room demanding to be the star even hand picking Mike Keenan to be the head coach completely ruining all momentum the team had built. You had a Hall of Fame player who felt he could be a first-line centre, when, if he slotted in at third line and not blow everything up, I think we would have been a better team. The team almost became about Mike and Messier and not the Canucks. Muzryn continues and goes on to reveal that as much as he resented the move to bring in Messier he actually despised former head coach Mike Keenan even more. I'm not a big Mike Keenan fan at all,» Murzyn said, adding that it actually caused so much destruction when he arrived. This is a sentiment that has been shared in the past by other players as Canucks enforcer Gino Odjick also confirmed back in 2020 that the move for Messier was a disaster. It was a disaster for us when he came to Vancouver The Canucks would go on to bend the knee to Messier and Keenan trading several key players including Trevor Linden and end up with nothing to show for it. Hopefully the Canucks can avoid repeating history this time with Elias Pettersson and keep the current core together and moving forward toward a Stanley Cup Championship.
