Reports have come in that a former Vancouver Canucks defenseman has signed a new contract overseas.
The hockey season is just weeks from getting underway and some leagues have already begun and today news has broken that former Canucks defenseman Brogan Rafferty.
Rafferty began his professional career after playing college hockey at Quinnipiac.
After a successful career with Quinnipiac Rafferty earned himself an opportunity to play professional hockey signing with the Vancouver Canucks.
Immediately after signing out of college Rafferty made his NHL debut playing a pair of games for the Canucks to end the season.
From there, Rafferty's career was very turbulent spending the next six seasons proving himself in the AHL with only one appearance with the Vancouver Canucks to show for it.
Unfortunately, this has led Rafferty to have limited options playing hockey in North America.
Former Canucks Defenseman Signs Overseas To Continue His Hockey Career
Now, Rafferty at 30 years old, will be signing with the Vaxjo Lakers in the Swedish Hockey League to keep his career going.
At his best, Rafferty was a top AHL defenseman and put up 50 plus points in a season.
Heading into his 30s now it is unlikely that Rafferty will find his way back to the NHL but he will have those Canucks appearances to look back on well after his career comes to an end.
As Rafferty heads overseas it will be interesting to see if he can find a new level of success that did not click when playing in North America.
