A new report has confirmed that former top prospect for the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames Joni Jurmo has decided to head overseas after failing to make it in the NHL. Earlier this week, several reports confirmed that the <a href='https://www.hockeylatest.com/nhl/news/flames-and-leafs-officially-place-players-on-waivers-in-mid-summer-moves' class='lien_marqueur' target='_blank' rel='noopener'>Calgary Flames would be terminating Joni Jurmo's contract</a> after he cleared waivers the day before. At the time, the termination was expected to mean that Jurmo would be signing either with another NHL organization or be heading overseas. Today, it has been confirmed that Jurmo will be heading back home to Finland to play for Kiekko-Espoo. <div align='center' class='pl20 pr20'><blockquote class='twitter-tweet' data-lang='en'><a href='https://twitter.com/athornhockey/status/1947717029189857412'><div style='border:1px solid #CCCCCC;border-radius:10px;padding:20px;width:300px;'>Loading from Twitter ...</div></a></blockquote></div> Jurmo will be returning to play in Finland with the organization that put him on the map as a top prospect shortly after being drafted. <div align='center' class='pl20 pr20'><blockquote class='twitter-tweet' data-lang='en'><a href='https://twitter.com/lassialanen/status/1365722938071277570'><div style='border:1px solid #CCCCCC;border-radius:10px;padding:20px;width:300px;'>Loading from Twitter ...</div></a></blockquote></div> After being drafted in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks Jurmo continued to develop himself in Finland for several seasons. Jurmo was seen as a hyper mobile offensive leaning defenseman with a ton of potential to impact an NHL roster some day. Finally, in January of 2024 Jurmo was given a fresh start after being traded to the Calgary Flames as part of the Elias Lindholm trade. <div align='center' class='pl20 pr20'><blockquote class='twitter-tweet' data-lang='en'><a href='https://twitter.com/tsn_sports/status/1752874374821003662'><div style='border:1px solid #CCCCCC;border-radius:10px;padding:20px;width:300px;'>Loading from Twitter ...</div></a></blockquote></div> After signing with the Flames Jurmo came over to North America for the 2024-25 season hopeful to earn an AHL opportunity to develop. Unfortunately, Jurmo saw little success playing only 17 games and not registering a point before being demoted to the ECHL. <div align='center' class='pl20 pr20'><blockquote class='twitter-tweet' data-lang='en'><a href='https://twitter.com/robthehockeyguy/status/1945158844436635704'><div style='border:1px solid #CCCCCC;border-radius:10px;padding:20px;width:300px;'>Loading from Twitter ...</div></a></blockquote></div> There he would play another 12 games and tally 10 points with the Rapid City Rush. At 23 years old this stunt in development led Jurmo to reconsider his NHL path and he will now head back to Finland as he tries to get his pro hockey career back on track.
