NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed a twist in the Kiefer Sherwood trade talks, saying it is a lot more complex than people think, kind of like a poker game.
The Vancouver Canucks are still trying to negotiate a new deal with one of the team's top goal scorers in Kiefer Sherwood.
As part of Hockey Night in Canada's coverage of Saturday Headlines, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Vancouver has offered Sherwood a new deal, but there is a clear discrepancy between what is being offered by Vancouver and what Sherwood's camp is looking for.
What Kiefer Sherwood has brought to the Canucks this season
Sherwood has been considered one of Vancouver's key players, and negotiations for him were part of Vancouver's rebuilding plans.
Sherwood, 30, is a pending unrestricted free agent and has become one of the key forwards for Vancouver in the 2024-25 season. The player has recorded 17 goals in 40 games, which leads the Canucks in scoring.
Moreover, it should be noted that the last campaign was his first season playing with the Canucks, and he broke the league record with 384 hits in his debut season.
Friedman has brought a new element to the table earlier today with regard to the trading aspect.
Why this is turning into a big poker game
While the Canucks are thinking ahead to obtain the best possible outcome, others are paying close attention to the situation and would love to have Sherwood for a steal as a last resort when negotiations reach a standstill, which Friedman describes as a big poker game.
"The 2 sides talked, they tried to get something done. On the trade front, the Canucks want the best deal, teams want to steal him, it's a big poker game."

Friedman says both the Canucks and Sherwood continue to communicate despite all this. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Sherwood broke into the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks during the 2018-2019 season.
Throughout his 305-game professional career with the Canucks, Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, and Nashville Predators, he has collected 60 goals and 59 assists.
