The aftermath of Saturday night's fiesty game with the Minnesota Wild did not treat the Vancouver Canucks well. Defenseman Derek Forbort suffered a broken orbital bone in a tussle with Wild center Yakov Trenin, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet confirmed on Sunday. Obviously, he's out for the year, and then we'll go from there, Tocchet said. It's a tough loss for us. You don't want a guy like that starting the summer like that. He's a big part of our team.

Tocchet admitted that an unwritten rule was broken
Forbort was forced out early after being punched late when he was on the ice, a situation that quickly got ugly. Yeah, there is a code, Tocchet said when asked if Trenin broke an unwritten rule with the punch. But unfortunately, it didn't happen and we gotta move on and we'll figure out those things down the road. The altercation finished with both players skating to the ice, but Trenin was able to get a punch when Forbort's head struck the ice. Forbort was clutching his face immediately and was escorted to the locker room, where he did not re-emerge. You can watch the gruesome scene unfold on X by clicking here Following a long video review, officials had Trenin sent out. He didn't go quietly, venting his frustration at the referees and attempting to fight Canucks players as he skated off. Canucks captain Quinn Hughes had no need for tact, describing Trenin's behavior as a circus act. Fellow defenseman Marcus Pettersson was even more blunt, deeming the punch one of the worst things he's ever seen. Vancouver went on to lose 3-2 in overtime.
