The management team for the Vancouver Canucks is facing criticism from NHL analysts Mike Halford and Jason Brough of Sportsnet over their handling of captain and former Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes.

The Vancouver Canucks went through one of the more difficult seasons in recent memory and fell short of making the postseason, only a year after winning the Pacific Division and advancing to Game 7 of the WCSF.
Head coach Rick Tocchet, who won the Jack Adams Trophy in 2024, has already left the team and is now the coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. Additionally, the Canucks went through several changes that included the trade of JT Miller to the New York Rangers after a confirmed feud with Elias Pettersson.
Meanwhile, there is also smoke surrounding captain and former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Quinn Hughes. Rutherford faced criticism for openly saying that Hughes wanted to play with his brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes, who are currently with the New Jersey Devils.
Recently, analysts Mike Halford and Jason Brough of Sportnet's 'Halford and Brough in the Morning' discussed the controversy and said that because it was Rutherford and not an analyst or a social media post talking about Hughes reuniting with his brothers, it makes the rumor more likely to have validity.
At the end of your media availability, he kind of got out in front of the Quinn Hughes thing and just said the quiet part out loud and that, yeah, Quinn Hughes has two brothers, both of whom play on the same team on the other side of the continent, and he's a free agent in not the this summer, but the summer following. And you have to be aware of that.

So in a way, Rutherford was addressing what was already out there. But there is an obvious difference between, you know, social media posts and media talking heads and pundits sort of throwing things back around. The president of hockey ops openly saying it in either an interview or a media availability, almost lends credence to it.

Hughes had 76 points (16G, 60A) in 68 games this year, though he wasn't able to play for the American squad at the 4 Nations Faceoff in February because of injury.
