Today, Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin provided an update on the Canucks plans for goaltender Arturs Silovs. The Vancouver Canucks have locked up their goaltending duo in the NHL after signing Thatcher Demko to a long-term extension. The multi-year deal for Demko keeps him and fellow goaltender Kevin Lankinen in Vancouver for the next several seasons on lucrative deals.

Loading from Twitter ...

Loading from Twitter ...

The move by GM Patrik Allvin also blocks the path to playing time for Calder Cup Champion and Finals MVP Arturs Silovs.

Loading from Twitter ...

With the Canucks goaltending duo set in stone reports have begun speculating that Silovs could be used as trade bait to fill some of those roster holes. This evening, GM Patrik Allvin addressed that speculation and gave an update on the Canucks plans for Silovs.
Patrik Allvin Provides A Cryptic Update On Arturs Silovs Future In Vancouver
In a new interview, Allvin was asked about the breakout season for Silovs and what the Canucks plans are for him long-term. Allvin refused to reveal his plans and admitted that he is willing to keep all options open heading into training camp. Arty is a young and extremely good goalie. He was just the MVP in the American League playoffs, outstanding. He's played at the highest stage for Latvia and will be on their Olympic roster. We'll see over the next couple of weeks if we carry the goalies to camp or if a decision is made prior to it. - Patrik Allvin This response from Allvin makes it incredibly unclear what the Canucks will do going forward. They could of course return Silovs back to the AHL again next season for more development. If Silovs outperforms either Lankinen or Demko in the preseason things could get interesting. This would then force Allvin's hand to either trade one of the goalies he has signed long-term or cash in on the sky high value of Silovs in a trade. Either way, having three NHL ready goaltenders is a luxury that the Canucks likely cannot afford right now. After failing to pick up any big names in free agency besides retaining Brock Boeser the Canucks are still in major need of help up front. If one of their three goaltenders can land them that help up front it is a move that must be made.
