Current Penguins' GM Kyle Dubas has revealed the biggest mistake he made while working as GM of the Leafs: signing John Tavares.

Dubas was recently interviewed by Craig Custance of The Athletic, where he revealed that he made a big mistake that he regrets while working as GM of the Leafs. Dubas stated that the way he pursued John Tavares during the 2018 free agency led to problems involving some internal players.
«The thing I learned was once we signed John to the (AAV) we did, it lifted the lid on the entire ceiling,» Dubas said.
Just like the Leafs are right up against the cap this year, the same could be said during the summer of 2018. Despite this, Dubas signed Tavares to a monstrous $11 million a year salary, for seven years. Many fans were shocked by this expensive signing and wondered why other big name players on the team such as Mitch Marner and William Nylander weren't prioritised by Dubas, which he realises now.

Now that Dubas has admitted to spending way more than he should have on Tavares, Penguins' fans are praying that he learnt from that mistake, and are hoping he will know how to handle the current situation in Pittsburgh, where many key players are up for contract renewals.
