Major Rangers shakeup on the horizon as Ryan Martin is a finalist to be the next GM of the Leafs

Frank Seravalli reported Martin and Boston assistant GM Evan Gold are among the finalists for Toronto's GM search this week.

That matters because Keith Pelley did not ask for a celebrity executive. He asked for a data-centered decision maker and left the org chart open on purpose.

Toronto finished 32-36-14 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016. This search is about fixing process before fixing the roster.

Martin fits that lane. The Rangers promoted him to associate GM in September 2025, and he still runs Hartford, which screams pipeline control and day-to-day detail.

Gold fits it too. He's been an assistant GM, director of legal affairs, and Providence GM, a profile built on cap work, contracts, and development.

Toronto may want a builder who can set the machine, not just pick the next winger.

Fans are right to read this as a shot at the old way.

Pelley has already said the next leader must use data better and make evidence-based calls. Martin's Rangers background lines up with that demand more than a headline hire does.

There is a second ripple here for New York. If Drury loses Martin, he loses one of the front office voices tied to Hartford, development, and internal succession.

For Toronto, this is not about replacing Brad Treliving with another nameplate. It is about choosing who rebuilds the decision tree around Auston Matthews and William Nylander after a broken year.

The next milestone is not the press conference. It is whether Toronto picks a system architect and finally sticks to it.
