The second round series between the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres has been must-watch hockey. For some confused fans, now, game 7 may not need watching.
The NHL bizarrely added several events to its Facebook calendar earlier today. In question? The 'upcoming' Sabres vs. Hurricanes conference finals.
Needless to say, Canadiens fans were immediately set off by these posts, and they took to social media to make their voices heard.
Rumours of possible rigging and fixing immediately exploded:
Apparently the NHL has already assumed Buffalo has won the series.
Is the fix in?
Is the fix in?
A game 6 to forget for the Montreal Canadiens
After getting off to a dominant three to one lead, scoring on all three of their first shots of the game, the Montreal Canadiens took the pedal off the gas. Seven unanswered goals later, the Sabres have now had the most dominant single game of the series.
Careless penalties by Mike Matheson, and to a lesser extent Lane Hutson gave the Canadiens extended minutes on the penalty kill.
Inconsistency from Jakub Dobes led to him getting pulled in the third, in favour of the young Jacob Fowler.
Either Buffalo Sabres or Montreal Canadiens will have difficult challenge ahead
Whichever team comes out of this series will have an extremely difficult opponent coming up. The eastern conference champion Carolina Hurricanes will have had 12 days off between the end of their second consecutive series sweep, and game one of the conference finals.
The classic question of momentum versus rest comes into play here; but there's little doubt that teams would rather be in the Hurricanes' position than not in this series.
We will see if game 7 is truly fixed, and if the NHL has leaked the script early. All that's certain is that we'll be getting a game 7 to remember.
Nothing like the playoffs.
