Ryan Nugent-Hopkins uncertainty makes Connor Ingram the Oilers' biggest gamble

Ryan Rishaug says Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is a game-time call, and Kris Knoblauch is turning to Connor Ingram in a huge March crease bet.

That is not small noise. Nugent-Hopkins carries a $5.125 million cap hit through 2028-29, and his 17-33-50 line in 57 games touches Edmonton's top-six, penalty kill, and man advantage all at once.
Ingram is not just a spot start anymore. He is 28, a 2016 third-round pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Oilers got him from Utah on October 1 with $800,000 retained, dropping his cap charge to $1.15 million on Edmonton's books.
That cost matters because Tristan Jarry's cap hit sits at $5.375 million through 2027-28. If Ingram starts and holds the crease, the Oilers get a cheaper path to steadier saves while Jarry fights for confidence in practice.
Edmonton enters Sunday against Nashville at 32-26-9, and the issue is simple. If RNH sits, Knoblauch loses his cleanest utility forward, and if Ingram stumbles, the crease debate gets louder before the next stretch of must-bank points.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins changes the Edmonton Oilers math

Oilers fans can handle chaos, but they are tired of guessing which goalie gives them a calm first save.
RNH is not about flash here. He is the connector who lets Connor McDavid's line breathe and keeps the second wave from feeling like leftovers.
Ingram's Oilers numbers, 9-6-2 with a 2.79 goals-against average and .891 save percentage, are not perfect. They are still more stable than Jarry's Edmonton run, 7-5-1 with a 4.17 goals-against average and .855 save percentage.
So this feels bigger than one Sunday start. It feels like Knoblauch choosing what kind of team he trusts down the stretch, the one chasing skill, or the one begging for structure before Tuesday arrives.
