Tonight, a new report from NHL insider Kurt Leavins has suggested three potential free agents that the Edmonton Oilers could bring in. The NHL offseason has begun to slow down with most of the big free agents off the board and most teams having their main needs filled. The Edmonton Oilers remain one of the teams hoping to add depth before opening night. Of course, the Oilers have limited salary cap space so they will need to target players who are not expected to make much more than league minimum.
Oilers Linked To Three Veterans Still Available In Free Agency
Reporter Kurt Leavins has put together a list of three players Klim Kostin, Brett Leason, and Jon Merrill who could all potentially be brought in on tryout contracts. As we near the dog days of August, it is worth watching whether a PTO or three are secured in Edmonton. Sometimes, useful players just can not find the contract they are hoping for but are willing to work for one. Maybe a winger with some grit (Brett Leason, Klim Kostin) or an organizational LHS D-man (Jon Merrill) - Kurt Leavins Klim Kostin should be a name that most Oilers fans are familiar with as he was part of the team during the 2022-23 season playing over 50 games in Edmonton.

Loading from Twitter ...

Loading from Twitter ...

Brett Leason is a Washington Capitals former second round pick who has spent the last three seasons with the Anaheim Ducks. Leason has turned into a reliable bottom-six forward who brings size and physicality and element the Oilers could use more of.

Loading from Twitter ...

Finally, Jon Merrill formerly of the Vegas Golden Knights and Minnesota Wild could provide reinforcement on the back end. Merrill is a 6'3 physical defenseman who provides an upgrade on the defensive end of the rink and over a decade of experience in the NHL.

Loading from Twitter ...

While these wouldn't be monumental additions for the Edmonton Oilers all three players provide a skill set that would be unique and fill a need in the lineup. As the offseason continues to roll along it will be interesting to see if the Oilers or another organization give these veterans a chance.
