Connor McDavid and Kris Knoblauch no longer face a mystery, but Edmonton's margin still looks thin.
LeBrun framed McDavid's future as a test of Edmonton's direction, not just a contract file.
As of now, that pressure has changed shape. McDavid has a signed 2-year extension beginning in 2026-2027, carrying a $12,500,000 AAV.
That gives the Oilers runway. It does not give them comfort.
McDavid just posted 48 goals and 138 points in 82 regular-season games, which is exactly why this story still bites.
Edmonton went 41-30-11, good for second in the Pacific, but that record leaves the front office with a hard truth: keeping McDavid is not the same as maximizing him.
McDavid's deal buys time, not trust
The post shows the segment turning from radio chatter into a contract-clock conversation around the Oilers captain.
Re Connor McDavid: "If you ask me, I think he'll probably give the Oilers at least another year, and then next summer's the big decision; I don't think McDavid would ever wanna...just walk out as a free agent and not have the Oilers get any value."

LeBrun's read that McDavid would not want to leave Edmonton without value still matters strategically. It points to leverage, timing, and how elite players protect both their legacy and their team's options.
Knoblauch is now coaching under a sharper lens. Every bench decision, every special-teams adjustment, every playoff matchup becomes part of the pitch.
Stan Bowman is in the same lane. The roster around McDavid has to look faster, deeper, and cleaner through the blue line before this extension starts feeling like another countdown.
The concern for Oilers fans is not that McDavid is gone tomorrow. It is that Edmonton has already burned too many prime years needing him to cover structural flaws.
A signed deal lowers the panic, but it also raises the standard.
