Connor McDavid is why Craig Berube would love Edmonton, and the Oilers are expected to interview him.
Elliotte Friedman did not float Berube as a courtesy name. He tied him directly to the Oilers' search and said coaching Edmonton would definitely appeal to him.
That matters because this is not a rebuild job. The Oilers finished 41-30-11 with 93 points and a +13 goal differential.
They also moved on from Kris Knoblauch after a first-round exit against Anaheim, despite two straight Stanley Cup Final trips before that.
Friedman turns Berube from a loose candidate into a real Edmonton name.

Berube fits the pressure in Edmonton
Berube would walk into a locker room built around McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and a power play that ranked first at 30.6%.
That is the appeal. Not comfort. Not patience. A loaded top six with a short runway.
The Oilers do not need a teacher. They need a coach who can push habits, bench passengers, and tighten the details without draining the room.
Berube's Toronto ending should not erase why Edmonton would look hard at him. His style is direct, demanding, and built for a team that already knows it can win rounds.
Stan Bowman's next hire has to survive immediate pressure. Edmonton's window is not theoretical anymore, and the fan base has no appetite for another soft reset.
If Berube interviews, the conversation should be simple: can he get more structure without taking the puck out of McDavid's hands?
That is why this link has weight.
Berube would not be walking into a project. He would be stepping behind a bench where anything short of a deep run gets loud fast.
