Lindy Ruff was visibly frustrated after a controversial quick whistle negated a critical goal from Beck Malenstyn.

The head coach did not mince words following the heartbreaking overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal walked away with the dramatic victory, securing their conference finals bid, but the officiating took center stage.
The incident happened deep in the offensive zone with the tension thick inside the building.
It was a tight checking affair all night.
Malenstyn crashed the crease hard, battling for loose change in the blue paint.
The puck clearly crossed the goal line behind the Canadiens netminder.
But the whistle had already blown.
It was ruled a dead play.

Lindy Ruff doesn't hold back in postgame press conference

Ruff bluntly told reporters it was a premature whistle that robbed his team of a massive goal.
What stings even more for the locker room is the absolute lack of communication.
The veteran bench boss confirmed he never received an explanation from the referees on the ice.
The Canadiens will head off to face Carolina in the conference finals, while the Sabres will start their offseason.
The Sabres exceeded expectations this season, and were rightfully cheered off the ice by their fans. Unfortunately, this controversy is not fading away anytime soon, and Sabres fans will always remember Beck Malenstyn's almost-series-winner in 2026.
