In recent appearance on the Donnie & Dhali Show, insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed the biggest reason why the Edmonton Oilers have not traded for a goalie.

Earlier today, the Edmonton Oilers once again missed out on acquiring a promising goalie ahead of training camp to compete with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard.
Coming into the offseason, goaltender was expected to be the biggest priority for the Edmonton Oilers outside of a Connor McDavid extension.
With just days until training camp gets underway neither of these points have been solved.
In a new appearance Elliotte Friedman justified why it has been difficult for the Edmonton Oilers to acquire a goalie that is truly an upgrade.

Elliotte Friedman Confirms Why The Edmonton Oilers Have Failed To Acquire A New Goalie

In the segment of the Donnie & Dhali show, Friedman admitted that the salary cap has been the biggest roadblock for the Oilers although the team did have interest in acquiring new Detroit Red Wings goalie John Gibson according to some sources.
If you look at it Skinner is 2.6 million and they're a cap tight team.

It's interesting when you discuss the Gibson situation. I've had some people who say the Oilers never talked to him. I've had other people say to me they tested to see his interest.

Outside of Gibson, Friedman simply believes that there has not been an intriguing enough goalie available to truly consider clearing salary cap space for.
I think the Oilers have said for the price it would take and the salary they would fit in there were no trades for a goaltender that made sense.

Stuart Skinner at 26-years-old is just entering his prime and could be in line for a major step forward.
If Stan Bowman and the Oilers are going to risk giving that upside away then they would need an absolutely guaranteed stud in net to replace him.
Unfortunately, at the moment, that option just does not exist on the trade or free agent market.
If Skinner struggles out of the gate goaltending could be revisited as a trade deadline need but for now all of the Oilers eggs are in Skinner's basket.
