The Buffalo Sabres recently said Owen Power was available in a trade, and Jeff Marek linked the Oilers to him but said one specific reason is stalling a trade.

Jeff Marek of 'Daily Faceoff' thinks the Edmonton Oilers haven't made a trade yet because the asking prices for the players they're targeting are too steep.

Appearing on 'Oilersnation Everyday', Marek said GM Stan Bowman could make a move now but it would require giving up more assets than the team is willing to part with at this stage.

«Teams are willing to make a deal, but only if they get more value than they're worth at the time,» he said. «Edmonton can make a deal for a defenceman right now, but the team that's selling will want more in return than what the acquiring team would want because essentially what they want to do is create a marketplace around the trade deadline. I think right now, all things being equal, unless there is a total collapse, they're by the Edmonton Oilers they're not going to make their moves until the deadline.»

Marek thought perhaps the Oilers would wait until January to see how the team fares. Historically, Edmonton finds its groove after the New Year and last year was no different when they went on a 16-game heater thanks in large part to Stuart Skinner's phenomenal goaltending.

Teams tend to avoid blockbuster trades in advance of the deadline as player prices often drop nearer the date and as playoff contenders become clearer.

As underwhelming as Edmonton's start has been, the Oilers are only four points back of the Calgary Flames for second in the Pacific Division, so long as their season doesn't completely go off the rails, they probably won't get serious about their blueline needs.

Marek identified the Buffalo Sabres as a potential trading partner. On the playoff bubble, the Sabres are hungry to end their 13-year drought and have pressure on them to succeed or blow things up.

«Everything's on the line in that organization. It's not exactly a secret,» he said «The players feel that, the players know it, behind closed doors the players talk about it. Everybody knows what is at stake with the Buffalo Sabres. Dylan Cozens has had a really rough season. Jack Quinn has had a rough start as well. You guys were mentioning Bowen Byram, and he may just end up killing them in arbitration if he's still with the Sabres and it gets there. The name Owen Power has been whispered out there as well.»

They could become active sellers if their season goes sideways. Deep on defence, the Sabres could be willing to deal a blueliner such as Owen Power or Bowen Byram to strengthen their forward group, and the Oilers would love a defensive reinforcement.

The two teams have recent trade history, having swapped Matt Savoie for Ryan McLeod and Ty Tullio this offseason. Familiarity between Bowman and Sabres GM Kevyn Adams could make future deals more likely.

While the fans are frustrated with a lack of moves, sometimes patience is a virtue. Typically, NHL teams wait until the trade deadline to make impactful deals to ensure they get better value.
