Per NHL analyst Chris Johnston, a potential hangup in the Edmonton Oilers acquiring Jordan Binnington is the past history of offer sheets on the part of the Blues, who signed both defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway.

The Edmonton Oilers continue to be in dire straights with regard to their goaltending situation, as neither Stuart Skinner nor Calvin Pickard is getting the job done for them.
Their numbers leave much to be desired, as Skinner is 8-7-3 with a 3.18 GAA and .878 SV%, while Pickard is 2-3-2 with a much worse 4.04 GAA and .847 SV%.
Those kind of numbers just will not be getting it done if the Oilers are to have any realistic shot at a third straight deep postseason run.
In the meantime, the Oilers have been linked to multiple goaltenders, including Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues and Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But per NHL analyst Chris Johnston, a potential barrier to the Oilers doing business with the Blues is the past history of offer sheets on the part of the Blues.
Chris Johnston: Re Binnington rumours: A team like the Oilers has to be looking at all their options; I had someone suggest to me...they don't think the Oilers and Blues could make that kind of trade given the recent history with the offer sheets - Chris Johnston Show (11/27)
In the summer of 2024, the Blues extended offer sheets to both defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway, which the Oilers chose not to match. St. Louis then signed both of them to two year contracts.

The Oilers Must Fix Their Goaltending If They Are To Have Another Deep Postseason Run

Most fans and analysts figured it was a foregone conclusion that Oilers GM Stan Bowman would bolster the team's goaltending in the summer, but he never did other than acquiring Connor Ingram from the Utah Mammoth in a depth move.
The Oilers already managed to convince Connor McDavid to stick around with a two year extension, but that gives them a finite window to put together a good enough team around him to entice him to stay beyond that.
Right now, the Oilers' tandem of Skinner and Pickard has proven to be not sufficient enough to get Edmonton over the hump, which naturally led to rumours of their looking outside the organization for help.
Binnington is on a poor Blues team and has another year left on his contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $6 million. So far this year, his numbers aren't the best either, as he's 6-5-5 with a 3.11 GAA and .882 SV%.
He has Stanley Cup experience and also helped Canada win the 4 Nations Faceoff last February, and could see his play improve on a better Oilers team.
