This evening, a new report from Frank Seravalli has suggested a creative solution that would allow Connor McDavid to get a big payday and still give the Oilers salary cap flexibility.

The Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid continue to hammer away at a new contract extension as he enters the final year of his contract.
Today, negotiations were complicated even more as Kirill Kaprizov of the Minnesota Wild signed a massive extension worth 17 million dollars per season.
While Kaprizov is a talented player he is not on the level of Connor McDavid which has led many to believe McDavid will get a truly unbelievable pay day.
If McDavid's extension ends up being over 17 million the Oilers will have to be incredibly creative to fit his contract into the salary cap.
This evening, insider Frank Seravalli provided a solution that could just do the trick to allow McDavid to get his record breaking deal while keeping their team together.

Frank Seravalli Suggests Bold New Plan to Re-Sign Connor McDavid While Keeping Salary Cap Space

In a new segment, Seravalli spoke about McDavid's situation and discussed the possibility of the Oilers using deferred salary to keep his cap hit lower.
Deferred salary is a new concept to the NHL but one Major League Baseball has used for the last couple of seasons.
It allows teams to spread out money over a long period of time to keep salary cap hits lower while allowing the player to still get their desired salary.
I am not saying that Connor McDavid is interested in a deferred salary configuration of his next deal. However, if he is at all, then the time is nigh to do it.

If Connor McDavid wants to sign a deal that gives the Oilers a chance to win by lessening his AAV, and also puts max dollars in his pocket, this is the way to do it.

If the Oilers are going to bring McDavid back this will likely be the way they have to go without losing other talent around him.
As negotiations continue it will be interesting to see if the idea of a deferred salary becomes required from the Oilers and Stan Bowman to get a deal done.
If so, McDavid could shut down talks entirely and test his luck in free agency to get a truly massive deal.
