Spooner was taken with the 45th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins after having spent the year with the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Kingston Frontenacs.
He would eventually break into the NHL with the Bruins, but also saw playing time with the AHL affiliate Providence Bruins along with the OHL's Sarnia Sting.
But in 2017, he was traded from the Bruins with Matt Beleskey, Ryan Lindgren, a first round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and a seventh round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Rangers for Rick Nash.
He didn't last long with the Rangers, as he signed a contract as an RFA with the Oilers in 2018.
He would become a journeyman, playing with the Oilers along with the Vancouver Canucks before taking his career overseas, playing with the NL's HC Lugano before moving to the KHL to play with Dinamo Minsk, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, Avangard Omsk, and the Dragons.
