Over the last 24 hours news has broken that a former Edmonton Oilers second-round pick has decided to sign a new contract overseas. According to multiple reports, Edmonton Oilers 2016 second-round pick Tyler Benson is on the move from MoDo Hockey in the Swedish Hockey League to EC Kassel Huskies.

Loading from Twitter ...

The Huskies have secured the services of Canadian forward Tyler Benson.

Loading from Twitter ...

After being drafted by the Oilers in 2016 the organization had high hopes for Benson as a middle-six power forward. Benson spent 3 seasons in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors trying to carve out a place with the Oilers. Finally, in 2021 Benson was given a full-time role with the Oilers but did not stand out and was then relegated back to the AHL. He then spent one season in the AHL with the Henderson Silver Knights before heading overseas to play in the SHL. This past season Benson played 31 games in the SHL but failed to record a point. Despite being given every opportunity to succeed throughout his time in the NHL, Benson just has not been able to put together all the tools that scouts saw almost a decade ago. He will now head to Germany and play in the second division of the DEL while trying to get his career back on track. As next season unfolds it will be interesting to follow Benson's progress.
