Edmonton Oilers unexpectedly rule out key defenseman ahead of Stanley Cup Finals rematch

After back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances, many believed that the 2025/26 campaign is the year the Edmonton Oilers can take the final step, and on Saturday, they've got the chance to prove that as they take on the Florida Panthers in a Cup Finals rematch.

However, just hours before the highly anticipated showdown between two very beat up teams, the Oilers were hit by another injury issue as they got some bad news on talented defenseman Jake Walman.

Fortunately, it's not a long-term issue, but for the matchup on Saturday night, Walman has reportedly been ruled out, according to Head Coach Kris Knoblauch as the Oilers blue line suffers a major blow.

It's unclear exactly what the injury is, but while Walman is expected to miss a few games, Knoblauch confirms that it's not a long-term injury, and that their deadline acquisition of a year ago is likely going to be back in a week.

The 29-year old has appeared in 17 games for the Oilers this season, picking up 3 goals and 10 points in that time, and with the Oilers struggling a little defensively early in the year, getting him healthy was key.

Now, they need to find that consistency on the blue line once again without Walman in the lineup, and if they can find that, there's no reason why they can't make a statement against their new rival Panthers in a key matchup on Saturday night.
