A native of Borlange, Sweden, Ekholm heads into his 15th NHL season and fourth with Edmonton.
Mattias Ekholm was Injured During the Playoffs Last Season and Missed Many Games
He appeared in 65 games for the Oilers last season, scoring nine goals and adding 24 assists, for a total of 33 points in 22:12 of ice time a night. He appeared in only seven playoff games in the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final before getting hurt. Originally taken with the 102nd overall pick of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Ekholm spent the first 11-plus seasons of his career with the Nashville Predators and was then acquired by the Oilers in February of 2023. That trade saw a first-round pick and Tyson Barrie head back to Nashville in exchange for his services. In his career, Ekholm has scored 86 goals and 274 assists in 884 games, averaging 21:44 of ice time per night. The Oilers open up their 2025-2026 campaign on Wednesday evening against the provincial rival Calgary Flames.
