Edmonton Oilers recall former first-round pick, place two players on injured reserve
The Oilers have made roster moves this afternoon, calling up former first-round pick Max Jones from the AHL, while placing two other players on injured reserve.
The Edmonton Oilers recalled left-winger Max Jones from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.
This recall occurred as a result of Connor Clattenburg and Jack Roslovic being placed on injured reserve, with Jake Walman being put on long-term injured reserve.
What Max Jones has done in the AHL so far this season
Jones, 27, has scored five goals and seven points in 17 games for Bakersfield, as well as accruing 49 penalty minutes.
He also has a reputation for being a physical player, which adds experience from playing in the NHL, where he scored a goal and an assist in 19 games for Edmonton in the previous season.
Why the Oilers chose to recall Max Jones over other forwards
Although Bakersfield has eight other forwards with a higher point total, it seems that the Oilers value physicality over scoring.
There has been a stretch of injuries to their wingers. Clattenburg was out with a massive slash to the face, Trent Frederic needed 14 stitches for a puck to the face, and Mattias Janmark also did not practice on Wednesday for maintenance reasons.
Frederic will return tonight, and that gives a break to the Oilers as Jones will move into a role that involves a lot of hitting.
With their tough forwards being benched, Jones' return to action has been strategic to maintain this fierceness. His toughness will come in handy for the Oilers in a crucial period of their season.
