Tonight, a new trade proposal by NHL analyst Caleb Kerney has suggested a move that would bring star goalie Ilya Sorokin to the Edmonton Oilers. The Edmonton Oilers have continued to search for a potential upgrade over their current goaltending duo of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. To start the season, Stan Bowman and the front office have held firm that they are confident in Skinner and Pickard but reports in recent weeks have confirmed that is subject to change if either goalie struggles early in the season. To this point, the main issue that has prevented the Oilers from landing a goalie upgrade has been their lack of salary cap space. However, a new mock trade from Caleb Kerney of Heavy Sports has found a potential trade that would allow the Oilers to land Ilya Sorokin while staying salary cap compliant.
Edmonton Oilers Linked to Superstar Goalie Ilya Sorokin
To make a move for a highly paid goalie the Oilers would essentially have to match that player's salary in outgoing salary. In the case of Sorokin, that would mean sending back just over $8 million to the Islanders. In his mock trade, Kerney accomplishes this by sending Stuart Skinner, Adam Henrique, and Brett Kulak to the Islanders in exchange for Ilya Sorokin. Oilers Acquire: Ilya Sorokin ($8.25 million) Islanders Acquire: Stuart Skinner ($2.6 million) Brett Kulak ($2.75 million) Adam Henrique ($3 million) In Sorokin, the Oilers would get a truly game changing goalie capable of putting up 0.925 save percentages and goals against averages in the mid to low 2.00s.

Loading from Twitter ...

The Islanders who seem to be entering a rebuild would get a younger goalie in Stuart Skinner to build around at 26 years old. They would also be able to use Kulak and Henrique as players to flip to other teams for future assets or veteran leaders for their young core looking to learn how to win in the NHL. While this trade is unlikely to happen, it would seem to be a good deal for both sides that could be exactly what each needs to get closer to their goals for this season. As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Islanders to see if they make Sorokin available and if they do whether or not Stan Bowman and the Oilers make an offer.
