NHL analyst Frank Seravalli reveals what is the major reason why Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman hasn't been able to upgrade his team's goaltending situation.

The Edmonton Oilers are only months removed from their 2nd straight painful loss in the SCF against the Florida Panthers, and for the 2nd straight year, their goaltending came under severe scrutiny.
They used both goalies in Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard during their postseason run as they did in 2024, and even though both goalies had moments of brilliance, they both faltered when it mattered most.
Oilers GM Stan Bowman was expected to make a major upgrade to the goaltending over the summer, but instead ran it back with the Skinner and Pickard tandem yet again.
After several new contract signings, the Oilers find themselves in a sticky financial situation, and per NHL analyst Frank Seravalli, that's the reason why they've not been able to trade for a goaltending upgrade.
Frank Seravalli: Re Oilers goaltending search: They haven't been able to do anything else cap-wise; they can't afford better; that changes for the first time next year, they're gonna have $15m in the summer - Big Show (10/10)
Based on Seravalli's comment, they'll shoot for an upgrade in goal next summer when there is more cap room.
The Oilers were previously tied to former Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart, but they won't be pursuing him as some thought they might be interested in doing.

Stuart Skinner is already facing criticism this year

Skinner is already facing intense scrutiny thanks to a blunder against the divisional foe Calgary Flames earlier in the week in Edmonton's 1st game of the year in which he mishandled what should have been an easy pass to a teammate and allowed Calgary's Blake Coleman to poke the puck through the 5-hole.
The Oilers blew a 2-0 lead and ended up losing 4-3 in a shootout.
Both Skinner and Pickard have only a year left on their contracts. If the Oilers want to get serious about winning the Stanley Cup, even though they've made the SCF the last 2 years running, making an upgrade in goal would go a long way toward making that goal a reality.

Did Stan Bowman make a big mistake by not upgrading the Oilers' goaltending over the summer?
