Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman recently addressed the media and confirmed why Dustin Schwartz was replaced by Peter Aubry as the team's goalie coach. Earlier this summer, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they would be moving on from longtime goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz. The move for the Oilers came after several years of inconsistency from the team's goalies and playoff failures the prevented the organization from capturing the Stanley Cup. While the lack of results in the Stanley Cup Playoffs alone would have been enough of a reason to make a change GM Stan Bowman revealed that results were not the only reason Dustin Schwartz was replaced.
Stan Bowman Confirms The Reason He Decided To Make A Goalie Coaching Change
Stan Bowman made a recent appearance on the 100% Hockey Show with Darren Millard and John Shannon. During the episode, Bowman was asked why he decided to pull the trigger on a goalie coaching change and the Oilers GM admitted it had more to do with a culture change than on-ice results. That was hard. It was. I know Dustin had been there for a long time, and I think it wasn't really so much about people doing a bad job. I think sometimes change is good. And when you've had one thing for a long time - [Stuart Skinner's] been there for a few years in a row, and same with [Calvin] Pickard. I just felt maybe a little bit of a different look would be good for our organization. When it comes to new goalie coach Peter Aubry, Bowman gave a glowing review of the personality that Aubry can bring and how much he's hoping that impacts both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. He's a fantastic guy, Bowman stated. He's fun to be around. I think he's a very collaborative guyI think he's established, always, a good relationship with the goalies. I think a lot of it is a technical aspect to goaltending, without a doubt. But I do think that there's a large part of it that's the mental sideIt's the toughest position to play in professional sports. If the Edmonton Oilers are going to finally seal the deal and take home the Stanley Cup the goaltending needs to see drastic improvement and that will all begin with this new approach from Peter Aubry and the Oilers staff.
