Recently, Connor McDavid surpassed another historic milestone in pursuit of a record currently held by Wayne Gretzky.

Connor McDavid is widely considered the best player in the NHL but has always been in the shadow of Oilers franchise legend and greatest player of all-time Wayne Gretzky.
Dating back to before he was drafted McDavid was already receiving Gretzky comparisons and those comparisons only increased once he was drafted by the Oilers.
Since then, McDavid has lived up to expectations and become one of the greatest players in the game.
This week, McDavid surpassed Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux for an impressive points milestone and now only has Gretzky to chase down.

Connor McDavid surpasses Mario Lemieux in pursuit of elusive Wayne Gretzky record

After recently recording his 1,215th career NHL point, McDavid climbed to second in league history in points recorded before the age of 30 passing Mario Lemieux.
An impressive feat by McDavid once again puts him behind Gretzky but without a chance to realistically pass him once again.
While McDavid does not turn 30 until January, he would need just under 1,000 points in that time which is impossible taking into account how many game there are between now and January.
This means McDavid despite being historically great will once again fall short of Gretzky placing him firmly in second place on the all-time Oilers’ lists and many NHL lists.
Despite the disappointment of not catching Gretzky, McDavid must be proud of the player he has become dominating the NHL on a nightly basis and racking up 100 point seasons on a regular basis.
While McDavid is unlikely to catch Gretzky, it will be fun to see how close he can get before his 30th birthday in January.
